05 Jul Missed Diagnosis and No Treatment
I’ve worked with many individuals with whom I have diagnosed with BPD, who have received the wrong diagnosis. BPD is treatable, but the individual needs to be properly diagnosed. This is tricky for several reasons: 1. Individuals with BPD typically meet criteria for other diagnoses. 2.There is a gender stereotype, so males are often overlooked. 3. There is a negative stereotype with the diagnosis itself, so individual with BPD who inhibit are often overlooked. 4. Clinicians are hesitant to diagnosis adolescents, although there is nothing prohibiting this in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM 5). Early treatment saves lives and can prevent a lifetime of suffering.
